WE DO NOT OBEY

From Promised Land blog, H/T Loewenstein.

Women in the footsteps of Ilana Hammerman: not obeying illegal and immoral laws

On Friday, July 23rd, a dozen Jewish women, a dozen Palestinian women, one baby, and three Palestinian children took a trip from the West Bank in six private cars. We crossed several checkpoints, drove to Israel’s coastal plain, and toured Tel-Aviv and Jaffa together. We ate in a restaurant, swam in the sea, and played on the beach. We ended our day in Jerusalem. Most of our Palestinian guests had never seen the sea. Most had not, in their entire lives, prayed at their sacred places: they looked upon them longingly from the heights of Mount Scopus.

None of our guests had an entry permit from the Israeli authorities. We are announcing here publicly that we deliberately violated the Law of Entry into Israel. We did this in the footsteps of Ilana Hammerman, after the state lodged a complaint against her with the Israeli police. She had written an article published in Haaretz on May 7th reporting on a similar excursion.

We cannot assent to the legality of the “Entry into Israel Law”, which allows every Israeli and every Jew to move freely in all regions between the Mediterranean and the Jordan River while depriving Palestinians of this same right. They are not permitted free movement within the occupied territories nor are they allowed to enter the towns and cities across the green line, where their families, nation, and traditions are deeply rooted.

They and we, all ordinary citizens, took this step with a clear and resolute mind. In this way we were privileged to experience one of the most beautiful and moving days of our lives, to meet and befriend our brave Palestinian neighbors, and together with them, to be free women, if only for one day.

We did not go with “terrorists” or enemies, but with human beings. The authorities separate us from these women with fences and roadblocks, laws and regulations, often claimed to protect our safety. In fact, the barriers are only designed to perpetuate mutual enmity and the control of Palestinian land seized illegally in contravention of international laws and the values of justice and humanity.

It is not we who are violating the law: the State of Israel has been violating it for decades. It is not we—women with a democratic conscience—who have transgressed: the State of Israel is transgressing, spinning us all into the void.

Henry David Thoreau, in his famous essay “Civil Disobedience” (1845) wrote:
“…when a sixth of the population of a nation which has undertaken to be the refuge of liberty are slaves, and a whole country is unjustly overrun and conquered by a foreign army, and subjected to military law, I think that it is not too soon for honest men to rebel and revolutionize. What makes this duty the more urgent is the fact that the country so overrun is not our own, but ours is the invading army.”

Listen to these words, see how aptly they describe our situation here and now —and do as we have done.

Just to say Gert,
I love your comments on that Richard Millet's blog.

Excellent stuff.

All the best!

Probably for not much longer, Joe. Perhaps the odd strafing run but faced with a small army of truth inverters and rail-roaders even I tend to cut and run.

Millett's blog, not the worst among Ziobloggers, shows that writing favourably on Zionism attracts the worst imbeciles imaginable. If the level of discourse at JsF would be anywhere near those levels you wouldn't see me dead there. Thankfully it isn't...

Exactly Gert.

That's one of the reason I admire your efforts.

I can't bring myself to comment on these blog zio-sewers.

I don't even mention their names unless I really have to.

I see there is a whole personal spiel about you, with some personal history, your image and where you live - all tactics beloved of the right and far-right. It's either that or they would have to keep their mouths shut as they have no moral and intellectual arguments to argue their case with.

Take care.

Millett's blog is an argument-free zone. Some 250 comments (I kid you not) have so far been dedicated to pure speculation about moi. I'm fully expecting the burning question: 'cat person or dog person, what do you think?' any time now.

The Palestinians? They don't even feature into the whole thing. Israel uber Alles!, that's all you'll ever learn there.

What's even funnier is that Richard 'Mr Hamas' Millett claims he's NOT a Zionist! Shit for brains...

- That's how it's usually done.

The supporters of the only democracy in the Middle East standard default argument is ad hominum.

They don't answer their critics but silence them one way or another.

The Israeli borg collective can't answer you're arguments because they're correct but they need to get rid of you somehow - there is only so much personal comments and abuse one person can take from a moronic collective.

It seems to be working in your case Gert, but I would say that this is because it's more like you hitting your head against a brick wall than anything to do with your feelings being hurt because some people don't like you.

all the best

One of them now claims to have found a name sake of mine on Facebook and believes it's me. Thankfully the 'worst offence' by said fellow is that... he reads Nietzsche!

You're making it out to look like Zionist commentators = ad hominem attacks. That's not the case. Some Zionists engage in that kind of despicable anti-debate tactic, while others (like me) really do want a serious debate.

Also, there are plenty of anti-Zionists who use ad hominem attacks. There's no room for Zionist commenters on Mondoweiss, for example. Every comment I've ever made there lead more often not to criticism of my agruments but to personal attacks on me.

While you're fundamentally right, you're also barking up the wrong tree. The abuse that I've been suffering on some Zioblogs of recently is beyond belief. What's more when I serve up some of their own medicine, some of my comments get deleted.

In the past I've suffered blog spamming and attacks by whole armada's of right wing bloggers.

I know for a fact there are Ziobloggers that behave perfectly well. Yours and Alex Stein's are but two examples. But when you get into the dregs of the rightwing sewersphere anything goes.

I know I'm barking up the wrong tree. I can't bark up the right tree without getting bitten :)

Would I bite you, Emm? I've not even shown my teeth! My point is that personal experiences can be very different. And I spend a lot of time in the Lame Duck's (sorry! Lion! Lion...) Den. ;-)

That's exactly what I was saying - you're not the one who bites in inappropriate places (which is why I agreed that I'm barking up the wrong tree).
