English Defence League and Israel's Flag: Stoke-on-Trent

Note that the photo above is from an earlier EDL demo but this fan here confirms again what I saw very clearly on late night news about the latest English Defence League's (EDL) Stoke-on-Trent demo: that Israeli flags were proudly brandished:

The recent outbreaks of activists waving Israeli flags was the first sign of a disturbance beneath the surface.

The EDL ( note the E in EDL ) stands for ENGLISH Defence League.
Now it is not easy to miss the fact that Israel is not in England.

Therefore the waving of the Israeli flag must be either a deliberate provocation of Muslims in order to incite hatred against the EDL or a deliberate statement about the nature of the EDL.

It appears both may be right.

The fact that people like Matthew Kaplan are in the EDL, who is not a British citizen, is not a British resident, is a Jewish student from America studying at Kings College are organisers for the EDL reveals the fact that the EDL has become something other than it seems.

Why would the EDL wave Israeli flags in the first place.

Why indeed? Now don't let me answer that...

I'm not familiar with the EDL. Are you sure the Israeli flag is the only foreign flag used in their demonstrations?

Absolutely. The only other (national) flags on display would have been the St George and the Union Jack. I'm pretty sure there's video footage of the demo available on YouTube, I just haven't looked for it.

I just looked at a 9-minute video of the Stokes-on-Trent demonstration. I saw lots of British and English flags, but no Israeli flags (for some reason I was amused that the only non-British flag I saw was Jamaican, though it seemed to belong to a store, not to protesters). It could be that there were Israeli flags that don't appear in the video, but I guess there weren't too many of them.

Maybe just one person came with an Israeli flag and you're reading too much into it?

What is significant about the EDL's support for Israel is that it follows in the footsteps of the BNP's support for Israel and Operation Cast Lead. That caused a bit of a storm in Britain.
