All You Ever Wanted to Know About Bunker Busters but Were Afraid to Ask

Will war against Iran be the logical consequence if the "diplomatic" efforts fail? No one knows with any certainty. Plans for war are constantly being honed, war games constantly being played out. One scenario involves the so-called bunker busters, in particular those containing a tactical nuclear warhead, the Robust Nuclear Earth Penetrator (RNEP) in milspeak. One resource illustrates and explains what these little beauties can('t) achieve, in an animated presentation. At the end of the "show" follow the links for more detailed information on various aspects of the RNEP.

Gert,

The US war in the middle east is resembling more and more Israel's war against the Palestinian whose main objectif is to break the will of the people. In this regard, bunker busters may not achieve military objectives but they will contribute to more chaos, more misery and more breaking of the will of the people in the middle east.
Read the document on the USA National Security Doctrine (link in my last post). I am still reading it and trying to extract some meaning from it...

Again thanks for posting the link for the animation. It is frightening ! Lets hope it will achieve some awakening and more co ncern for the cominbg war among ordinary citizens.

Well, if breaking the people's will is the objective, they will be sadly mistaken. History shows conclusively that waging war on a people tends to make them rally around their leaders and become entrenched and determined to stand up against their aggressors. This is precisely why both Palestinian on Israeli and Israeli on Palestinian violence cannot achieve anything but further entrenchment on both sides.

Re Iran: if regime change is the objective, then bombing will set that process back by decades, possibly eliminating any chance of reform at all. In that context the Mullah's might even welcome a few bombs...

gert,

I agree. However, there are some who believe that Sharon's agressive and brutal policy drew the Intifada to a halt. I am not sure.

All in all what this kind of dangerous belligerance without dialogue is doing is reviving extremism on both sides.

Interesting stuff. Don't agree with an iota of it, but well done. Nobody says we all must agree but it's good to see intelligent discourse no matter what side one happens to be on.

Gert -

You make it sound like "The Great Satan" is on the warpath and looking for an excuse to attack Iran. Nothing could be further from the truth. Even the current administration is keenly aware that another engagement on the scale of Iraq or Afghanistan will not be tolerated by the American people - not without a very significant provocation.

Nuclear bunker busters? Sorry, but even I have not heard of a legitimate threat to use them against Iran in the foreseeable future.

Conventional Bunker-Busters are more effective anyway - and it is precision that matters most. Sorry to disagree Gert, but you may be disappointed if I don't! ;-)

Cheers!

You continue to display an uncanny ability to completely misinterpret my posts on the Iranian nuclear conundrum, including this one.

In fact, I'm rather convinced that both sides will try and exhaust all diplomatic options first. I've repeatedly said so.

My posts are largely in response to the endless chorus of Republican bloggers, calling for immediate and decisive military action ("bomb now", "nuke Iran" (T-shirts are available), "bust the bunkers now", "regime change Iran" etc etc, ad nauseam). These are the guys on your side, as I seem to remember... Is it possible you're a little out of touch?

Thanks.

Dropping a nuclear weapon on Iran is probably the single worst thing the U.S. could do at this point. I've got a long post over at my blog about some new evidence that nuclear bunker busters are planned and on why that's so bad. I mostly talk about the B61-11 bunker buster, but much of what I said will apply to any earth penetrating nuke.

Keep up the sanity... we need a lot more of it in this country.
